USA have won the 2019 Women's World Cup after beating Netherlands in the final at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon.

Goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle, saw the American team win 2-0. After a goalless first half, Rapinoe scored with a penalty after a high-footed tackle.

The USA have defended their title and remain on top of the world for a record-extending fourth time.

It was a tough start for the US – Netherlands goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal pulled off a number of fantastic saves in the first half, denying Alex Morgan twice in the space of minutes.

The 29-year-old recorded four saves in the first half, a joint-personal record in a single game this tournament.

But she couldn't stop a 61st minute penalty from captain Megan Rapinoe, who converted from the spot after a high foot on Alex Morgan went to VAR.

It marked Rapinoe's 50th goal for her country.

The US went on to dominate play, applying a high press throughout the second half, a tactic the Netherlands struggled to deal with.

Sarina Wiegman's side did have their chances but Rose Lavelle's left footed strike in the 68th minute put the game to bed.

It was a deserved goal from the 24-year-old midfielder, who has arguably been the Unites States' best player this summer.

The US were rarely troubled in the final minutes of the game, a regular trend in this World Cup tournament.

The FIFA Women's World Cup has really stepped its game up for 2019; it became the UK's most viewed women's football tournament ever. England vs USA was the most watched TV programme of the year and despite being defeated 2-1 in the semi-final, the Lionesses were still victorious.

A year after Gareth Southgate's Three Lions bowed out of the World Cup in the semi-finals, the whole country have got behind the Lionesses, who picked up where the men left off, doing wonders for the women's game in the process.
